25 States

My trip to Connecticut last week got me to 25 states in the race!

Now that I’ve been to half of the states, I thought I’d reflect a little.

I’ve very much enjoyed the places I’ve visited, lived, and experienced. I can thank my family and job for giving me the opportunity to do so.

You often hear stereotypes about regions and the people that live there. And I gotta say, lots of time, they can be true.

state stereotypes

But there’s a reason behind those stereotypes, and I’ve gotten the chance to see for myself.

I’m happy to say I’ve met a lot of people from different walks of life, who grew up with different backgrounds and in different cultures.

And I can’t wait to meet more. I mean, what’s more exciting than seeing how others live and then learning from it?

Here’s to the next 25 states being just as interesting!

Yale

Snow everywhere.

That pretty much sums up my trip to support Yale New Haven Hospital’s go-live.

The adventure started with flight delays, cancellations, and rebookings that got me to New Haven late in the night.

Then to get to work at 7am, I had to trudge through over 30 inches of snow. Like I said, snow everywhere. On the sidewalks, in the roads, everywhere  and everything.

Winter storm Nemo really did a number on the city. In fact, it produced the first snow day at Yale since 1978.

It did clear up a little on day two though, enough for this cool view from the hospital:

I didn’t really get out much due to the icy streets, but I did manage to eat some slam dunk pizza at Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana and check out parts of Yale’s campus, which looked a lot like Hogwarts from Harry Potter lore.

Shapeshift

I’m sure you’ve heard this question as an icebreaker or just through curiosity: “If you could have any superpower, what would it be?”

I used to say that I’d love to be able to fly, but if you asked me today, I think I’d switch that to being able to shapeshift.

And I don’t mean half-assed only-on-the-outside shapeshifting. I want the whole thing, inside and out.

How cool would it be to completely transform into another being, animal, or object? To take on their perspective and literally see the world through their eyes.

It would probably be the most exciting and interesting thing in the world.

And if everyone could do it? Empathy overload.

Someone please invent this.

Up In The Air

Now that I spend so much time traveling, I’ve developed ways (not unlike George Clooney’s character in the movie Up in the Air) to spend as little time in airports as possible.

That scene when he lays out his security line strategy: avoid the lines with the children, families, old people, and foreigners; choose the line with the frequent business travelers.

I now follow these guidelines, almost to a tee, and it saves me precious minutes from waiting in line.

It definitely adds up, especially when traveling almost every week. As much fun visiting new places is, constant travel can be a grind.

When I saw the movie way back when, I didn’t think much of it except for that it was a cool, efficient strategy. But it’s taken on a whole new meaning now that I live it.
